"The number of melanoma is still increasing, especially among white people of old age," said lead researcher, Dr Eleni Linos, from the Department of Dermatology at the SUMC. "This calls for greater awareness of patients, physicians, and their families."

The researchers based their study on data from the Surveillance programs Epidemiology and End Results to identify new cases of melanoma between 1992 and 2004. During that period, 80,596 cases of melanoma diagnosed among non-whites in the United States Hispanyol and found 3.1 percent increase, according to the study.

In addition, according to the study, the number of melanoma doubled in all socioeconomic groups, while deaths from the disease did not increase sharply.

The researchers, who suspect the effort to get the skin brown as the main cause, calling for increased public education to prevent people from too much sunlight.
